10 Ways to Celebrate Virtual Teacher Appreciation Month

May is Teacher Appreciation Month and while we may not be able to celebrate our teachers in the same way we have in years past, it doesn’t mean we appreciate them any less. In fact, after homeschooling for the last month, I would say most parents (myself included) appreciate them a million times more!

If you’re looking for clever and fun way to celebrate your teacher when schools are closed then be sure to check out these 10 virtual teacher appreciation ideas.

10 Ideas for Virtual Teacher Appreciation Month

1. Photo Collage of Class

Share an inspiring message from the children in the class. Ask your child to write their assigned word on a sheet of paper, color it, and decorate the word. Then take a picture of them holding their word picture/sign and either email or text it to a designated person. Use a photo app to create the collage.

Quote Ideas for Teacher’s Collage:

-“Thank you will never be enough! We love you and miss you, (name). Love, Your Kindergarten Class”

-“By doing what you love, you inspire and awaken the hearts of others.” (quote by Satsuki Shibuya)

-“They may forget what you said but they will not forget how you made them feel.”

-“A teacher effects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops.”

-“A teacher plants the seeds of knowledge, sprinkles them with love and patiently nurtures their growth to produce tomorrow’s dreams.”

2. Teacher Tribute Video – Individual or Montage

Ask students to create a video of themselves sharing a thought, words of appreciation or even hellos with the teacher. Then, have students/parents email those videos to the teacher on a designated day. Or, create a video montage by collecting videos from each student, string clips together and set to music.

3. Flood the (Snail) Mailbox

Ask the class to mail cards, pictures or a completed teacher appreciation printable. Plan ahead so mail will hit the teacher’s mailbox on Teacher Appreciation Day or during Teacher Appreciation Week.

4. Chalk the Walk

Whether you chalk your own walk and send a picture to your teacher or (with permission), chalk theirs, allow your kiddos to express your thanks with a fun and creative picture.

5. Surprise Drive-By Parade

Teacher Appreciation Parade

Deck out the car with festive posters and decor, get the car horns ready, blast some music and give your teacher the ultimate drive-by parade. Be ready for air hugs, smiles and waves galore. Stay in the car and be sure to honor the social distance guidelines.

(To Note: Consider working with a roommate/spouse/partner to verify that the parade is appropriate for where the teacher lives. Also, be sure to plan a time when the teacher will be home.)

6. E-Gift Card

Allow teachers to choose their own gift by give an e-gift card. Amazon is always a favorite virtual shopping destination while a place like Starbucks, Walmart, or Lowes can be used during or after quarantine. Of course, a Visa gift card is always an easy option when cash isn’t appropriate.

7. Gift Card to Local Restaurant Offering Curbside Takeout

Treat your teacher while supporting a local business with a gift card to a favorite restaurant. Whether your teacher chooses to use it now for a special meal via curbside takeout or saves it until regular business resumes, this gift works double duty to support the restaurant while feeding the teacher.

8. Decorate with a Yard Sign

Make a yard sign or order one from Etsy (like the one pictured here) and place in your teacher’s yard. Each time they walk outside, they’ll be reminded of how special they are!

9. Distance Learning Dress Up Day

Make the day’s live distance learning (using platforms like Zoom or Google Hangouts) entertaining by asking the class to dress up wearing their teacher’s favorite color, the school colors or other special theme. Maybe everyone could hold a sign? Wear a silly hat or funny glasses? When the teacher logs in and sees her class, she’ll be thrilled to see that the class coordinated a special day just for him/her.

10. Send an E-Card to Their Inbox

Hallmark E Cards for Teacher Appreciation

Browse the option of E-cards offered on various websites such as Hallmark. In fact, Hallmark says, “You can now send eCards that look handwritten! You can select the style of handwriting each time you personalize an eCard. Select one that’s closest to your handwriting or one that’s even better!”
