Valentine’s Day Gift for Kids

If you’ve ever been to Dylan’s Candy Shop in New York then you’ve likely seen their candy- and treat-packed “Tackle Boxes.” The concept is adorable and so smart because you get just a taste of everything. However, in the store, the boxes retail for around $26. Can’t make it to NYC? You can find them online for upwards of $48! (And, yes, you probably remember seeing something similar in Target a few years ago…)

Here’s the GREAT NEWS – You don’t have to travel to NYC to gift your special someone (or yourself!) with this adorable sweet-filled box. In fact, you can make THE SAME style candy box with for SO MUCH LESS MONEY using a variety of candies, a plastic divider box and stickers, a Cricut or a paint pen.

How to Assemble a DIY Valentine’s Day Candy Box

1. Choose a Plastic Organizer Box

Before you begin choosing the treats, decide what size box you want to use. Based on what you purchase, most boxes will vary between 9 and 15 slots. Often you can find the boxes at Dollar Tree (like what you see pictured). However, I found some other options with a speedy delivery from Amazon. Check out some of these boxes that average between $1 and $2.25 per box:

2. Find Treats for the Box

Once you choose your box, let the fun begin! Of course, you can go with candy and even use all that are a certain type (like all red and pink, all sour, all chocolate, etc), or you can branch out and include other treats such as nuts. Or, skip the snacks completely and fill each slot with a tiny gift like fun earrings, Mocchi Squishies, hair rubber bands, Legos or toys… What would you choose?

3. Decorate and Customize the Valentine’s Day Box

Now that the box has been chosen and the contents decided, it is time to let the decorating fun begin. You can leave the box as is or depending on your level of craftiness, personalized it using stickers, paint/paint pens with or without stencils or a Cricut.

Valentine’s Day Class Party Treat

The adorable box you see pictured was made by my super clever and crafty friend, Laura, for our kindergarten class’s Valentine’s Day party two years ago. In fact, she had that lightbulb moment and realized that it wasn’t worth paying a fortune for something pre-made when she could make it herself. One look at the candy box and I told her that I had to share on the blog! The children’ in the class were THRILLED to have all of their favorite candies in their own special container. And now, two years later, the girls use their boxes for their jewelry!
