As Seen on Talk of Alabama: Memorial Day Recipes 2017

Hi All!

Thanks for tuning in to my Talk of Alabama segment on Friday, May 26, 2017. Missed the episode? No worries! Here it is!

In the meantime, here are the recipes shared during my segment. I hope you enjoy them and Happy Memorial Day!

**Note: This segment was sponsored by Smithfield and fairlife ultra-filtered milk. However, they did not sponsor this additional blog post. I just wanted to share all of my fun ideas with you!

Brats Bar

Thanks to Smithfield for being one of my TV segment sponsors!

Smithfield has a new line of bratwursts, the Craft Collection where they partner with craft breweries around the US. I was excited to share one of their new products, Smithfield Yuengling Traditional Lager Bratwurst, and give ideas on how to set up a simple Brats Bar. Both Smithfield and Yuengling are brands with a rich heritage that are dedicated to craftsmanship so this seemed like a perfect partner.

To set up the Brats Bar, I offered 3 options:

  • Tex Mex: Grilled corn, fresh pico de gallo, cilantro and cotija cheese are all delicious topping ideas for these brats.
  • Farmers’ Market: Grill the best veggies from the farmers’ market alongside your brats then slice or chop and serve over. Offer fresh basil as a topping or take it to the next level and make flavored herb aolis.
  • Beer and Cheese: Stew sweet onions in beer (ideally Yuengling) until caramelized and top with shredded Wisconsin cheddar.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie Pops

Thanks to fairlife ultra-filtered milk for being one of my TV segment sponsors!

Chocolate and peanut butter may just be my favorite flavor combination ever so whenever I can put those two ingredients together, I do. That is why I LOVED fairlife ultra-filtered milk’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie and wanted to make it a double duty recipe that not only could work as a delicious protein-packed breakfast but a simple and luscious dessert. fairlife ultra-filtered milk uses a unique process to concentrate milk making it packed with more goodness like 50% more protein, 30% more calcium and 50% less sugar than regular milk. Plus it is lactose free which is a bonus for people looking for a creamy and rich dessert option over the holiday weekend.

Plused Up Pasta Salad

I’ve shared my mom’s Company Pasta Salad before that boasts 25 cups of pasta and veggies. For today’s segment, I gave it another nutrient boost by adding pulses. Pulses (aka beans, lentils, chickpeas, and peas) take the nutrition in the pasta salad to the next level by adding a healthy source of plant protein as well fiber, iron, potassium, folate and more.

Blackberry Spritzer

Quench your thirst while rehydrating with a simple Blackberry and Lime Spritzer. I simply muddled blackberries (fancy word for smushing them), added them to a glass and topped with fresh lime juice and club soda. Of course, if you want some alcohol you can certainly top with prosecco. For a fun way to serve your spritzer, skewer a lime wedge and a blackberry with a toothpick or add a mint leaf to the mix.

I hope you all have a safe and happy Memorial Day! Let me know what you’re cooking and don’t forget to check out the segment!
